At FIREFIGHTER48, we strongly encourage every firefighter to participate in the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer (NFR). While the information available about it can feel overwhelming, we want to make this simple. Here are two key reasons why you should take a few moments to complete the registry:

  • More Data Means More Funding

The more firefighters who participate in the registry, the stronger the data becomes. This data directly impacts funding for firefighter cancer research, leading to more resources and solutions for cancer prevention, treatment, and support in the fire service.

  • Ensuring Your Service Is Recognized

When NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) is notified of a cancer diagnosis, they are not automatically informed that you are a firefighter. By completing the registry, you ensure that your diagnosis is counted as firefighter-specific, helping NIOSH produce data that benefits the entire profession.

To clarify, this is not about the government collecting personal information. NIOSH already tracks cancer diagnoses nationwide. Completing the registry simply ensures that firefighters with cancer are accurately represented, which is crucial for advancing resources and funding in the fire service.
