THE FILM
Occupational cancer has become the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths among firefighters, yet awareness of this crisis remains alarmingly low outside the fire service and medical community.
This awareness gap has resulted in insufficient community and government support for firefighters battling job-related cancer, a lack of innovation from the private sector and academia, and inadequate progress in addressing this growing epidemic.
In 2024, Firefighter48 took decisive action by beginning production on a feature-length documentary to confront the awareness issue head-on.
This powerful documentary, directed by the multi-award-winning filmmaker Patrick Gramm, creator of the acclaimed short film Dying to Save You, will illuminate the harrowing impact of occupational cancer on firefighters. It delves into the groundbreaking medical interventions aimed at saving lives and highlights the Mockstrong100 movement—a vital grassroots campaign working to ensure that 100% of Phoenix firefighters receive critical cancer screenings. With an estimated 50 to 120 Phoenix firefighters potentially living with undiagnosed cancer, this initiative is a lifesaving call to action for the firefighting community.
Currently in production, the documentary will deliver an unforgettable and urgent message, laying the foundation for the change needed to tackle this crisis.
Scheduled for completion by October 1, 2025, the film aims to vastly increase awareness, ignite action, foster support, inspire and accelerate efforts to find innovative solutions, and ensure no firefighter battles occupational cancer alone.”
