Never Forget Scott Leatham
Captain Scott Leatham lived a life defined by love, positivity, and service. As a devoted husband, father, firefighter, and friend, Scott inspired everyone around him with his unwavering optimism and selflessness. Born on December 9, 1985, Scott grew up in Washington and Utah before pursuing his passion for helping others through a career as a firefighter. He joined the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department in 2013, fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter.
Scott’s dedication to his craft was unmatched. Rising to the rank of Captain Paramedic in 2022, he earned certifications as a paramedic, technical rescue technician, and SWAT medical support team member. He also served as a rescue diver with the department’s special operations dive team. Beyond his professional achievements, Scott was known for his natural leadership, contagious smile, and deep bond with his Tempe Fire family.
Scott’s personal life was a testament to his deep capacity for love. He married his high school best friend, Ashley, in 2007, and together they built a beautiful life centered on their children, Kaden and Kali. Whether cheering for the Arizona Cardinals, playing sports with Kaden, or enjoying cherished lunch dates with Ashley, Scott’s joy came from the simple, meaningful connections he shared with his family.
In July 2024, Scott was diagnosed with NUT carcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer caused by exposure to carcinogens in his firefighting career. Despite the hardships, Scott faced his battle with the same strength and courage that defined his life, becoming a source of inspiration for his family and colleagues. Tragically, Scott passed away on December 19, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 39 years old.
Scott’s legacy lives on through the #LeathamStrong100 campaign, an effort to honor his memory by ensuring 100% of Tempe firefighters are screened for cancer. His story reminds us of the risks firefighters face and the importance of proactive health measures to save lives.
