Think about that firefighter in your department—the one who always greets you with a big grin, as if they’ve just received the best news of their life. The kind of person who remembers your kids’ names, your birthday, and that crazy call you handled together, reminding you with a smile, “Man, you crushed it.” Hopefully, someone like this comes to mind because we’re all better for having them in our lives. For the Phoenix Fire Department, that person is Anthony Mock, better known as simply “Mock”.

Mock is the definition of a hero that has lived a life of service. As a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force, he’s served on deployments to Iraq, the UAE, and Afghanistan and continues to serve in the reserves.

As a Captain on Engine 18, the busiest firehouse in Arizona, he’s a dedicated leader and role model. And as a husband to Caitlin and father to Peyton and Kinsley, he’s the proud coach who never misses a practice, shaping his daughters’ and other youth is his community’s lives with unwavering love and commitment.

For the past few years, Mock has faced a relentless battle with kidney and adrenal cancer. Despite surgeries, immunotherapy, chemo, and radiation, the cancer has spread to his lung and liver. Adrenal cancer is so rare it affects just 1 in 1 million people annually, but Mock has approached this fight with the same determination that defines his life.

When asked, “What can we do to help?” Mock’s response is simple and powerful: “Get screened for cancer.” Mock’s mission is clear: to protect the lives of Phoenix firefighters by encouraging early detection through the MockStrong100 campaign. The goal? To ensure 100% of Phoenix firefighters get screened for cancer.
